How did water skiing start?

The first waterskier was Ralph Samuelson in 1922 at a speed of 20 mph.

He made his own using boards for skis in Minnesota, the land of 10k lakes.

His first skis were 8 feet long and 9 inches wide with leather straps. He also became the first ski jumper.

You can compare his original skis with modern ones that are 59 inches to 68 inches (159 to 172 centimeters) long.
